St Marks Programme

What We Do

Discover how our structured residential programme supports lasting recovery
through therapeutic support, personal development and community.

From the beginning, St Mark's has taken a holistic approach to the treatment of addiction. This approach is derived from the ideas based on the Te Whare Tapa Wha model, developed by Professor Mason Durie.

The programme is built around four interconnected pillars of health:

Taha Hinengaro

Mental Health

Taha Wairua

Spiritual health

Taha Whanau

Family Health

Taha Tinana

Physical Health

How the Programme Works

St Marks provides a structured residential programme that supports people to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. The programme combines therapeutic support, personal responsibility and community living to help tangata whai ora develop the skills and confidence needed for long-term recovery.

Beginning the Programme

Residents join the programme as Juniors, where they become familiar with the daily routine, programme expectations and therapeutic community.

As they grow in confidence and demonstrate commitment to their recovery, they may progress to Senior status, taking on additional responsibilities while providing encouragement and support to others.

Therapeutic Support

The programme includes a wide range of therapeutic and educational activities designed to support recovery and personal development. These include:

  • Group therapy
  • Life story work
  • Relapse prevention
  • Anger management
  • Assertiveness training
  • Communication and relationship skills
  • Building self-esteem
  • Educational programmes

Each resident is also supported by a Key Worker, meeting regularly to review progress, discuss challenges and set achievable goals throughout their recovery journey.

Building Life Skills

Recovery at St Marks extends beyond therapy sessions. Residents are encouraged to develop practical life skills, personal responsibility and healthy routines through a variety of everyday activities.

These include budgeting, gardening, property maintenance, cooking, art, exercise and contributing to the daily operation of the therapeutic community.

The programme also encourages participants to strengthen relationships with family and whānau, build positive support networks and prepare for employment and independent living.

Recreation and Wellbeing

Physical wellbeing is recognised as an important part of recovery. Residents have opportunities to participate in a range of recreational and fitness activities including:

  • Gymnasium workouts
  • Circuit training
  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Exploring the Marlborough region

These activities help promote healthy lifestyles, improve wellbeing and provide opportunities to enjoy recovery in a positive and supportive environment.

A Structured Community

Every day follows a structured timetable that balances therapeutic groups, personal development, recreation and personal responsibility. This consistency helps residents establish healthy routines while developing the confidence and skills needed for life beyond St Marks.
